Natas - Un viaje hacia un lugar distinto

Evil zine Switzerland - Natas - Febrero 1999

Can you give us a brief history of the band: What are your names? How old are you? When did you start the band ? and how did it happen? What are you doin for a liviní? (pretty stupid, isnt it?)
Walter 26, computer service man. Miguel 22, jobless hippie. Sergio 24, life manager. We started playing toghether around 1994.

What we know about Argentina are only stereotypes like: tango, gauchos, Maradona and Batistuta (one of my favorite player ! do you like futbol?). Could you tell us what happens in Buenos Aires? Which are the most famous bands in Argentina?
Yeah, we like futbol. But just when Argentina official team plays against other countries. Argentina is like living in Central America. Wild. Famous bands like: Divididos. Babasonicos. Massacre. Fun People. Santoro.

As we know your country have been for a while under the dictorial government of the General Videla. How does it feel to grow up in a country where people have been tortured for their ideas? Did the music scene survive the years of censorship? Could you explain me how is the political situation right now in Argentina (is it really the last year for Carlos Menem)?
People have been tortured because of crazy Militars, not for their ideas. So we don't feel any pressure to stand for our ideals more than anyone else. It was a fucking wild thing what happened, but we don't use that for our music. There was a very small scene in those days. like 10 bands only. And yes, they are still playing. Like Pappo and Alberto Spinetta. Carlos Menem is a drug and guns dealer. He uses our country as a part of his businness. Takes lots of taxes from us. Sells parts of the country and public services to other countrie's companys. The economy is quite ok. Prices don't rise as we where used to. Our money is 1 to 1 with american dollar since 4 years. That's good. But salaries are very lowr, like $500 p/month average sallary.

Ok, stop with the political stuff (sorry but itís always interesting to learn something about another countries. Let me know what do you know about Switzerland, except that we're rich. We discovered Natas last year with your album on Mans Ruin records. Let me know how Mans Ruin heared about you?
I've been to your country when I was 13 years old with my dad, very nice place. The air is fresh, cool people. Very small land but nice. About Mansruin, well, we recorded Natas Delmar here in Argentina in a friends studio in 1996. We released tapes with nice artwork and gave them away for free at the shows, to our friends, and I also sent some to record labels around the globe, and also to bands I dig. Like kyuss and the Melvins. One day, january 1998. KoziK called me by the phone, and said he liked the music a lot, and he wanted to release the album. So, he sent the contract. Ok. We sent him the master CD, and things started happening. Mans Ruin and Kozik are straight,
cool, radikal people. We like them.

Frank Kozik is the King of Heavy-Fuzzy-Shit and his label is the home of the braves. Are you close to all the heavy-stoner stuff? Are you the latin sons of Kyuss?
We are not sons of Kyuss. We heve been playing in rented houses in the middle of dessert/sea/weed scenes since 1994. We realized about the Stonner rock shit last year. Anyway, I think that's just a name they give us for people to get closer to the bands. But we made very close to the bands at the West US Coast. They rule. Nebula, Gammera, Volume, Men of Porn, Unida, all of them are good people.

You did some dates in California with Nebula and one show with Unida (do you know when they ll put something out?). How did the kids enjoy your shows? What did you think about the USA?
Unida is recording an album for Mans Ruin to be released about July. And there People really enjoyed our shows. It was great fun. The US is very nice. You can get what you want and share it with good people.

Your next record will be out in June and itís produced by Dale Crover. The new stuff is always in the Kyuss veine or is more rough like the Melvins songs? How was it to work with Dale? And why Dale Crover? We were expecting Josh Homme or Billy Anderson!
I don't think the Delmar album is in the Kyuss vein. We are 3, and different people also. Having instrumental heavy songs doesn't mean shit. But, our new album CIUDAD DE BRAHMAN is more mystic. Heavy and amusing than Delmar. It sounds like one only one hour song. Dale is very good friend with Kozik, and he liked our Rutation demo very much. Those songs are included on the new shit in different versions. So he wanted to do the record with us. He got us all the Melvins Amps to record, and his drum set. He is an incredible guy.

Like every acid-stoner-desert-rock band you have such a fascination with the Devil. I mean Natas/Satan. Could you explain me what do you like into all that stuff? We named the zine Evil, cuz is the way we read the word Live ! No its because we love rocknroll and the Devil is part of it, isn't it ?
Devil and God is the same. Who could say what is good and what is bad. No one. NatassataN is the same. Is a mirror.

Are you planning to come in Europe?
Yes. We are making lots of friends there. We'll try to make it someday. Anyway, I'll go to play there this year. To Spain, to do some shows with another band of friends of mine called Santoro. We are about to release our first album here in Argentina.

The band, the album, the show, the movie or the event who changed your life?
Band: The Police. Show: Nebula. Movie: All that Jazz. Who: my woman Mara.

Best experience under drugs?
Having LSD with Mara one day after meeting her in a beach/woods/desert scene down here in Buenos Aires.

Well. thanks and see you soon.
Metal is calling, be there.
